Fossil Fuel Divestment

Last Thursday a group called Better Future Project / 350 Massachusetts protested outside of the State House demanding that Massachusetts divest from fossil fuels.

The group is behind S. 1225 – An Act relative to public investment in fossil fuels. S. 1225 directs the Pension Reserves Investment Management (PRIM) Board to cease new investments in fossil fuel-based companies and to divest the public Fund of all fossil fuel holdings within five years.

Governor Patrick spoke in favor of divestment. At the commencement ceremony of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, he referenced “heat waves, coastal flooding, intense precipitation and more extreme storms” and invoked a “future free of fossil fuels.”  He also called for Massachusetts to “finally end all reliance on conventional coal generation” within the next four years.
