Greg Bialecki Wants to Intentionally Raise Parking Costs

Secretary of Housing and Economic Development, Greg Bialecki, argued for raising the cost of parking in areas like Somerville, Cambridge and Boston last week during on conference on parking strategies.

The conference, which was sponsored by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, focused on the supposed, high cost of free parking. The discussion was centered around the work of UCLA urban planner Donald Shoup. Shoup argues that free parking is a subsidy because not all people drive.

Bialecki argues for to what extent can we use parking strategies to encourage people to use public transit and other alternate forms of transportation.
